Virus Scan Guidance
How to initiate quick and deep full system antivirus scans.
Running Background Scans and Scheduling Threat Checks
Regular system checks prevent latent spyware or ransomware files from installing. Follow these guidelines to execute scans:
Quick Scan vs. Full System Scan
- Quick Scan: Audits active memory, startup registries, and core operating system folders. Runs in 2-5 minutes and should be done weekly.
- Full System Scan: Inspects every directory, secondary hard drives, and compressed ZIP archives. Can take several hours and should be done monthly.
What to do if a threat is discovered
If the scan flags a file, do not panic. Most programs automatically move threats into a secure "Quarantine" folder where they cannot run. Review the quarantine list, research the filename, and select "Permanent Delete" if unneeded.
